OVERVIEW
Rarotonga is a compact volcanic island in the South Pacific, with a mountainous forest interior and settlements arranged along one coastal road. A shallow lagoon and fringing reef surround much of the island. The interior rises too steeply for extensive settlement, concentrating homes, churches and businesses along the coastal strip. Streams descend rapidly from the mountains towards the lagoon.
Snorkelling, hiking and village food provide the main experiences. Buses and scooters make movement simple, while local culture remains visible through churches, markets and community events. Sunday observance and community events remain prominent, while markets and dance performances connect visitors with living island culture. The cross island walking route provides the clearest view of the forested interior.

THINGS TO DO
Taste regional food scene in Rarotonga
Use Rarotonga’s regional food scene as a starting point for tasting food connected to Rarotonga, choosing regional dishes or produce rather than a generic international meal. Opening days may shape the plan.
Snorkel around Rarotonga’s principal snorkelling waters only when sea conditions and access are suitable. Use local guidance where currents or reefs are unfamiliar, and never promise particular marine-life sightings.
Walk Rarotonga’s coastal trails
Choose a walk around Rarotonga’s coastal trails that matches your time, fitness and current conditions. Check the route and weather locally instead of assuming every trail is accessible year-round.
