OVERVIEW
Aitutaki is a small inhabited island in the Cook Islands surrounded by a much larger triangular lagoon. The main land area contains villages, churches and low hills, while a ring of reefs and tiny uninhabited islets encloses clear, shallow water in many shades of blue. The lagoon is the destination’s defining feature and supports boat trips, swimming, snorkelling and visits to remote sandbanks.
Life on the main island is quiet and local, with few large resorts and little conventional nightlife. Most visitors spend at least one day on the lagoon, but cycling or driving through the villages gives a better sense of the community beyond the water. Weather strongly affects the colour and clarity of the lagoon, yet the combination of inhabited island and broad reef system remains impressive in changing conditions.
