OVERVIEW
Quirimbas Archipelago is a long chain of islands off northern Mozambique, with reefs, mangroves and small communities spread across a lightly developed coast. Historic trading settlements and maritime traditions remain visible on several islands. The northern islands preserve coral stone ruins associated with centuries of Indian Ocean trade, while southern islands remain more closely tied to fishing.
Boat travel is essential, while diving and village stays provide very different experiences. Security conditions in the wider region require careful checking before any journey. Logistics vary greatly between islands, and conservation work must balance tourism with fragile reefs and community needs. Historic mosques and trading houses survive within several coastal settlements.
