OVERVIEW
Grande Comore is the largest island in the Comoros, built around the active volcano Mount Karthala. Lava fields, tropical vegetation and small settlements spread along the coast, while Moroni provides the main urban centre. Beaches are fewer and more fragmented than on many neighbouring islands. Beyond the central area, islands and volcanic slopes continue to organise settlement, movement and everyday land use.
Hiking the volcano is the strongest outdoor experience, though it requires guides and good conditions. Village life, markets and Islamic traditions provide the main cultural interest. Infrastructure is limited and journeys can be slow. Exploring beyond island interior reveals volcanic slopes, a part of the destination that short visits often miss.
