OVERVIEW
Anjouan is a mountainous island in the Comoros archipelago, rising sharply from the Indian Ocean between East Africa and Madagascar. Deep valleys, waterfalls and cultivated slopes support cloves, vanilla and ylang-ylang, while villages and small towns cling to the coast and lower hills. The historic capital contains narrow streets, carved doors and old mosques that reflect centuries of trade across the western Indian Ocean.
Road journeys reveal crowded settlements, plantation country and high viewpoints over the coast. Hiking and village visits provide more insight than conventional resort facilities, which remain limited. Infrastructure can be basic and travel times unpredictable, but dramatic relief, agricultural life and Swahili-Arab culture give the island a strong identity within the Comoros.
