OVERVIEW
Ilha de Moçambique is a small island town off the northern coast of Mozambique, connected to the mainland by a narrow bridge. Coral stone houses, mosques, churches and a large fortress reflect centuries of Indian Ocean trade and colonial rule. Dense residential quarters continue beyond the formal heritage zone. The transition between churches and mosques is visible across the destination, especially away from its best known centre.
Walking reveals a striking contrast between grand abandoned buildings and active neighbourhood life. Seafood, boats and local craft traditions add everyday depth. Heat is intense, but the island’s compact scale makes exploration manageable. Coast provides the most immediate experience, while churches offers a quieter and more local perspective. Routes through island interior lead naturally towards churches, so the experience changes without requiring long transfers.
