OVERVIEW

Port Douglas is a small resort town in northern Queensland, built beside a long sandy beach and a marina serving the outer reef. Low rise streets, restaurants and hotels form a compact centre. The settlement developed from a nineteenth century port and still retains a small street grid distinct from the surrounding resort properties. Mangroves and tidal creeks remain visible around the marina and estuary.

Boat trips and rainforest journeys are the main reasons to stay, while markets and waterfront walks add an easy local rhythm. The town is highly visitor focused but remains more intimate than larger coastal hubs. Access to both coral reefs and lowland rainforest makes it possible to experience two very different ecosystems from the same base.
