OVERVIEW
The Daintree is a tropical rainforest region in northern Queensland, extending from river lowlands to mountains and undeveloped beaches. Dense forest reaches almost to the sea, while boardwalks and guided walks provide access to plants and wildlife found nowhere else. A ferry crossing marks the entrance to the more remote northern section.
Wildlife is often easier to hear than see, though birds, reptiles and large flightless cassowaries may appear near roads and clearings. Rivers contain crocodiles, making swimming unsafe in many places. The combination of rainforest and coast is extraordinary, but heat, humidity and limited services require preparation.
