OVERVIEW
Cairns lies on a humid tropical coast between the sea and steep forested mountains. The city centre is compact and built around an esplanade, marina and lagoon-style swimming area, while mangrove flats occupy much of the immediate shoreline. Its main importance comes from access to the Great Barrier Reef, nearby rainforest and the highland plateau inland.
Boat departures, dive operators and tour companies give the centre a strongly practical visitor focus. Restaurants and night markets keep the waterfront active after excursions return, though the city itself has fewer major sights than the landscapes around it. Heat, rain and marine conditions influence plans, making flexible scheduling useful.
