OVERVIEW
Kaliningrad is a Baltic city separated geographically from the rest of Russia, with surviving German fortifications, Soviet districts and modern commercial streets layered across the former city of Königsberg. Museums, cathedral ruins and neighbourhood architecture reveal repeated political ruptures more clearly than a single preserved old centre could. Coast occupies a different part of the destination from fortifications, giving the wider area a clear physical structure.
Current travel restrictions should be checked carefully, while the nearby coast and lagoon landscapes add a different regional dimension. The city is most rewarding when its fragmented architecture is read as evidence of repeated destruction, rebuilding and political change. The contrast between lagoon and fortifications becomes clearest when more than one part of the destination is explored.
