OVERVIEW
Kaunas is Lithuania’s second largest city, built where two rivers meet and shaped by medieval, imperial and interwar periods. The compact old town contains churches and merchant streets, while extensive modernist districts reflect the years when the city served as the temporary capital. Settlement and movement follow the transition between churches and river across the wider area.
Museums, design and university life give the centre an energetic contemporary character. River walks and neighbourhood streets reveal how the city’s modern identity extends beyond its historic centre and interwar architecture. The strongest contrast comes between museums and river, which support different activities and daily rhythms. Churches is experienced differently from museums, so both areas contribute useful but separate perspectives.

THINGS TO DO
Look closely at Kaunas Mosque for a concrete introduction to Kaunas’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Trace local history at Kaunas Castle
Use Kaunas Castle to understand a specific part of Kaunas’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
Explore Kaunas Picture Gallery
Focus on Kaunas Picture Gallery for a collection that adds real context to Kaunas. Check current exhibitions and opening days, then allow enough time for the sections most relevant to the destination.
