OVERVIEW
Klaipėda is Lithuania’s principal seaport, built beside a narrow channel connecting the Baltic Sea with a large lagoon. German influenced architecture, maritime museums and working docks shape the centre, while ferries provide access to the Curonian Spit. Lagoon occupies a different part of the destination from museums, giving the wider area a clear physical structure.
The city feels practical and understated, with seafood, theatre and harbour walks adding local character. Ferry access to dunes and lagoon landscapes makes the surrounding coast as important as the urban centre. Routes through lagoon lead naturally towards harbour, so the experience changes without requiring long transfers. The contrast between museums and harbour becomes clearest when more than one part of the destination is explored.

THINGS TO DO
Admire Orthodox Church of All Russian Saints
Look closely at Orthodox Church of All Russian Saints for a concrete introduction to Klaipėda’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Explore History Museum of Lithuania Minor
Focus on History Museum of Lithuania Minor for a collection that adds real context to Klaipėda. Check current exhibitions and opening days, then allow enough time for the sections most relevant to the destination.
Trace local history at Klaipėda Castle
Use Klaipėda Castle to understand a specific part of Klaipėda’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
