OVERVIEW
Gdańsk stands on the Baltic coast near the mouth of the Vistula, with a historic centre of tall merchant houses, churches and former warehouses. Its port wealth, wartime destruction and later reconstruction are visible throughout the old streets. The shipyards also became central to the Solidarity movement and the end of communist rule. Beaches and churches belong to the same connected landscape, although they often feel distinct on arrival.
Walking along the river and through the restored centre reveals strong architectural coherence, though much was rebuilt after 1945. Museums on war and political resistance add substantial depth. Nearby beaches and neighbouring coastal cities broaden the experience beyond the old town. Conditions around coast differ from those near beaches, making flexible timing useful.
