Ivindo is a protected rainforest region in north eastern Gabon, centred on large rivers, waterfalls and dense equatorial forest. Clearings and river corridors support gorillas, forest elephants and abundant birdlife. Human settlement and visitor infrastructure are extremely limited. The destination is physically divided between river and waterfalls, with roads and settlements linking the two. Across the wider destination, waterfalls remains physically connected with forest, and local settlement follows that relationship.
Access requires specialist guides, river travel and careful logistics. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but the forest itself is the main experience. Humidity, insects and remoteness make travel demanding, with waterfalls and rainforest providing the wider context. River journeys and forest camps make the remoteness an essential part of the experience. Rainforest is encountered differently from forest, making it worthwhile to leave time for both parts of the destination.
