OVERVIEW
Lopé is a protected rainforest and savanna region in central Gabon, where open grassland meets dense equatorial forest. Elephants, gorillas, mandrills and abundant birdlife move through a landscape also containing archaeological evidence of long human occupation. Across the wider area, forest remains closely connected with grassland, rather than forming an isolated visitor zone. The wider destination extends from forest towards rainforest, with local communities occupying the ground between them.
Wildlife viewing requires guides and patience, with seasonal mandrill gatherings providing one of the most remarkable possibilities. Access is limited, but the ecological and cultural depth makes the region far more than a conventional safari stop. Savanna is encountered differently from forest, making it worthwhile to leave time for both parts of the destination.

THINGS TO DO
Take a game drive in Lopé
Take a guided game drive in Lopé’s principal game-viewing area, using local expertise to understand habitats and animal behaviour. Wildlife moves freely, so no species or sighting should be guaranteed.
Explore Lopé’s archaeological sites
Explore Lopé’s archaeological sites to understand the ancient settlement, belief or engineering that shaped Lopé. Allow enough time to read the site rather than treating it as a photo stop.
Trace Lopé’s ancient history
Use Lopé’s ancient history to understand a specific part of Lopé’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
