OVERVIEW
Isalo is a protected rock landscape in southern Madagascar, formed from deeply eroded sandstone plateaux and canyons. Dry grassland, palm lined streams and natural pools create striking contrasts. Local communities maintain cultural and burial traditions connected to the massif. Main settlements and surrounding landscape belong to the same connected landscape, although they often feel distinct on arrival.
Guided hiking is essential because heat, distance and route finding are significant. Short walks reach pools and viewpoints, while longer routes cross exposed terrain. Sunrise and evening light reveal the strongest colour in the rock. Grassland provides the most immediate experience, while canyon walls offers a quieter and more local perspective.
