OVERVIEW
Andasibe-Mantadia is a protected rainforest region in eastern Madagascar, reached by road from the capital. It is especially known for the indri, the largest living lemur, whose far-carrying calls are often heard at dawn. Several reserves protect humid forest containing many other lemurs, chameleons, frogs, orchids and birds, while a small town provides lodges and guiding services.
Guided walks are essential because wildlife is difficult to find without local knowledge. Daytime trails focus on lemurs and forest ecology, while night walks reveal chameleons, frogs and nocturnal species. Paths can be muddy and rain is common, but the region offers one of the clearest introductions to Madagascar’s unique biodiversity without requiring a domestic flight or a long expedition.
