OVERVIEW
Antananarivo is Madagascar’s capital, spread across a series of ridges above rice fields and dense lower districts. The upper city contains the restored royal palace, churches and older highland houses, while markets and commercial streets fill the valleys below. Red earth, terraced slopes and traditional brick architecture give the city an appearance very different from Madagascar’s coastal towns.
The city is visually dense and traffic can be difficult, but its history becomes clearer from the higher neighbourhoods. Views show how royal, colonial and modern districts developed across separate hills, while craft markets, museums and food provide cultural context. Many meaningful places are dispersed and not immediately obvious, so a local guide or carefully planned route can greatly improve the visit.
