OVERVIEW
Honiara stretches along the northern coast of Guadalcanal, with government offices, markets and residential areas arranged beside a sheltered bay. The city grew after the Second World War and contains memorials, museums and battle sites linked to the Pacific campaign. Forested hills rise quickly behind the urban strip. Away from the principal landmarks, markets gives way gradually to coast across the wider area, with waterfalls providing an additional point of connection.
The central market and waterfront provide the strongest sense of everyday activity. Roads and services can be basic, while heat and humidity shape movement. Excursions to waterfalls, villages and wartime sites provide greater depth beyond the practical city centre. Routes through forest lead naturally towards coast, so the experience changes without requiring long transfers.
