OVERVIEW
Rabaul is a small town in Papua New Guinea, positioned beside a vast volcanic harbour and surrounded by active cones. Ash and eruptions have repeatedly damaged or displaced the urban centre. The original centre lies within a caldera, leaving streets, tunnels and buildings exposed to ash and continuing geological risk. Coconut plantations and villages occupy the greener land around the harbour.
Volcano viewpoints, military history and local markets provide the main interest. Current volcanic conditions and local guidance are essential when planning any visit. Nearby communities have adapted through relocation and rebuilding, making volcanic activity part of both the landscape and recent social history. Diving sites include wrecks and reefs within the sheltered volcanic harbour.
