OVERVIEW
Essaouira is a fortified coastal city built around a working fishing harbour and compact medina. White walls, blue shutters and straight streets reflect planned eighteenth century design, while sea walls protect the centre from Atlantic wind and waves. Galleries, workshops and music traditions add a strong artistic identity.
The Skala ramparts, fishing harbour and orderly medina can be explored comfortably on foot. Strong alizé winds support kitesurfing and shape the city’s cool Atlantic atmosphere, although they can make conventional beach days less comfortable. Gnawa music, woodworking and small galleries add depth beyond the blue boats and white walls.
