OVERVIEW
Agadir is a modern city on Morocco’s Atlantic coast, rebuilt on a wide, low-rise plan after a devastating earthquake in 1960. Its main features are a long sandy beach, a broad seafront promenade, a working fishing port and a large market selling food, spices and household goods. A hilltop fortress above the city preserves the clearest visible link with the settlement that existed before the earthquake.
The city is designed more around beach holidays and modern services than around an old medina. Resorts, restaurants and cafés line the coast, while the market and port provide stronger contact with everyday local life. The city also gives access to surf towns, mountain valleys and desert-edge landscapes nearby, but the beach and reliable visitor infrastructure remain its central strengths.
