OVERVIEW
Constantine stands on a rocky plateau cut by the deep Rhumel Gorge. Bridges link separate sections of the city above sheer cliffs, while the historic centre contains mosques, markets and dense streets overlooking the ravine. Modern districts extend beyond the original plateau, but the gorge remains the defining physical feature.
Walking between bridges and viewpoints reveals the scale of the ravine more clearly than any single monument. The old city occupies the rock above the gorge, while newer neighbourhoods spread across the surrounding plateau. Congestion can make movement slow, yet sudden views of stone houses, viaducts and sheer cliffs give the city an identity unlike any other major urban centre.

THINGS TO DO
Taste regional food scene in Constantine
Use Constantine’s regional food scene as a starting point for tasting food connected to Constantine, choosing regional dishes or produce rather than a generic international meal. Opening days may shape the plan.
Admire Emir Abd Elkader Mosque
Look closely at Emir Abd Elkader Mosque for a concrete introduction to Constantine’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Trace local history at Passerelle Slimane Mellah
Use Passerelle Slimane Mellah to understand a specific part of Constantine’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
