OVERVIEW
Bejaïa lies on Algeria’s north-eastern coast, where steep green mountains descend to a sheltered bay. The city has a long history as a Berber, Roman and medieval trading centre, reflected in surviving gates, fortifications and older streets. A working port occupies part of the waterfront, while residential districts climb the surrounding slopes.
Nearby headlands and national park landscapes offer dramatic coastal walks and views over the bay. The centre is lively with markets, cafés and everyday commerce rather than heavily oriented towards tourism. Road access through the mountainous region can be slow, but the meeting of sea, forest and urban history gives the city a strong identity.
