OVERVIEW
Algiers is Algeria’s capital, climbing steeply from a Mediterranean bay. The oldest quarter is a dense hillside maze of white houses, mosques, stairways and small courtyards, while lower districts contain grand avenues and public buildings from the French colonial period. Modern neighbourhoods extend far along the coast and inland, creating a large city whose historical layers are visible in both architecture and street layout.
The Casbah requires time and local orientation, with steep lanes, historic houses and active neighbourhood life packed into a dense hillside. Seafront boulevards, museums and cafés offer a more open urban experience below. Traffic and limited tourist infrastructure can complicate movement, but the contrast between Ottoman, French and contemporary districts is the city’s real strength.
