OVERVIEW
Annaba is a major port in north-eastern Algeria, built around a sheltered Mediterranean bay beneath green hills. The modern city centre contains broad colonial-era streets, markets and active commercial districts, while nearby archaeological remains preserve the Roman city associated with Saint Augustine. A large hilltop basilica overlooks both the ruins and the present-day urban area.
Ancient, Christian, Islamic and modern industrial history sit within a relatively compact setting. The seafront remains functional, with fishing, shipping and everyday trade clearly visible. Beaches and wooded slopes soften the dense urban landscape, while the archaeological area explains the city’s importance long before it became a modern port.

THINGS TO DO
Spend time at Beaches rather than treating every nearby beach as interchangeable. Swimming conditions, access and facilities can vary, so check locally before entering the water.
Explore Church of Saint Augustine of Hippo
Explore Church of Saint Augustine of Hippo to understand the ancient settlement, belief or engineering that shaped Annaba. Allow enough time to read the site rather than treating it as a photo stop.
Trace local history at Salah Bey Mosque
Use Salah Bey Mosque to understand a specific part of Annaba’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
