OVERVIEW
Arusha sits on a fertile plateau in northern Tanzania, between major wildlife areas and the slopes of Mount Meru. It is a working regional city with markets, offices, residential districts and a growing hospitality sector, rather than simply a departure point for safaris. The cooler highland climate and surrounding farms give it a greener appearance than much of the nearby lowland countryside.
Safari planning remains central to the local economy, and many visitors pass through before travelling to national parks or climbing routes. Even so, craft centres, coffee estates and busy neighbourhood markets provide a fuller picture of the region. Traffic can be heavy and the centre is spread out, but the city offers useful cultural context before or after time in the surrounding landscapes.

THINGS TO DO
Learn local traditions at Arusha Cultural Heritage
Use Arusha Cultural Heritage Centre to learn about living traditions connected to Arusha, choosing respectful, locally led encounters. Avoid treating contemporary communities or religious practice as a performance.
Use Arusha’s main climbing area as the focus for a climbing day suited to your ability. Local access, equipment and weather matter, so go with a qualified guide when conditions or routes are unfamiliar.
Take a game drive in Arusha
Take a guided game drive in Arusha’s principal game-viewing area, using local expertise to understand habitats and animal behaviour. Wildlife moves freely, so no species or sighting should be guaranteed.
