OVERVIEW
Amboseli is a national park in southern Kenya, set on a dry plain near the border with Tanzania. Underground water from Mount Kilimanjaro feeds marshes that attract large numbers of elephants, buffalo and birds even when the surrounding grassland is dusty. On clear days, Africa’s highest mountain rises beyond the park, creating the famous backdrop seen in many wildlife photographs.
Elephants are the central attraction, often seen in family groups moving between open ground and wetlands. Lions, cheetahs, giraffes and other plains animals are also present, although the compact park can concentrate vehicles around major sightings. Cloud frequently hides Mount Kilimanjaro, so the safari should not depend on one view. Wetlands and long-term elephant research add lasting value beyond the scenery.
