OVERVIEW
Ngorongoro is a protected savanna and highland region in northern Tanzania, centred on an immense volcanic caldera. Grasslands, forests and lakes support dense wildlife populations within the crater, while pastoral communities live across the wider conservation area. The destination is physically divided between lake shore and lakes, with roads and settlements linking the two, with savanna providing an additional point of connection.
Game drives provide the main access to the crater floor, where traffic can become heavy around sightings. Longer stays allow time for quieter highland landscapes and cultural context beyond the central safari circuit. Time spent around forest also brings grassland into view, adding a different layer to the visit. A visit centred only on lakes would overlook forest, where the wider landscape and local activity remain visible.
