OVERVIEW
Alexandroupoli is a coastal city in north-eastern Greece, close to the borders with Turkey and Bulgaria. Its centre is modern and low-rise, organised around a seafront promenade, a distinctive lighthouse and an active port. Beaches extend beyond the urban area, while nearby wetlands are internationally important for birds. The city also serves as the main ferry departure point for the island of Samothrace.
Restaurants, cafés and evening walks along the waterfront provide much of the appeal, while museums and markets introduce the mixed cultural history of this border region. The city is a useful base for nearby wetlands, road journeys and ferry travel. It offers fewer major monuments than Greece’s better-known historic centres, but its working seafront and regional role are easy to appreciate.
