OVERVIEW
Edirne stands in north western Turkey near the meeting point of major rivers and historic routes into Europe. The city’s skyline is dominated by monumental Ottoman mosques, especially the work of the architect Sinan. Markets, bridges and low rise neighbourhoods surround the historic core. Settlement and movement follow the transition between coast and mosques across the wider area.
The great imperial mosques are the main architectural focus, while stone bridges, bazaars and local food reflect the city’s former role as an Ottoman capital. The centre is manageable on foot, although riverside areas lie farther apart. Its position near several borders gives it a history and atmosphere distinct from both coastal and central inland destinations.
