The city is the main base for visiting the ruins of Troy and the First World War battlefields across the strait.

The promenade is central to daily life, especially in the evening when cafés fill and ferries cross beneath coastal lights. Historical excursions are substantial enough to occupy full days, but the city itself remains easy to navigate. University life and a working port prevent it from feeling like a simple staging point for nearby memorials.
