OVERVIEW
Agrigento is a hill town on Sicily’s southern coast, overlooking a broad archaeological landscape of Greek temples, olive groves and dry valleys. The modern centre occupies the higher ground, while the ancient sanctuary stretches along a ridge below, making the destination feel divided between a lived-in provincial town and one of the Mediterranean’s most important classical sites.
The temples are the main reason to come, but the modern hill town adds restaurants, evening life and views over the archaeological ridge. Walking through the site shows how the monuments once formed part of a much larger ancient city. The separation between the upper town and temple zone requires some planning, particularly without a car.
