OVERVIEW
Catania spreads across the lower slopes of Mount Etna beside the Ionian Sea. Its centre was rebuilt in dark volcanic stone after earthquakes and eruptions, creating broad baroque streets, churches and squares with a distinctive black-and-white appearance. Markets, university buildings and a working port keep the historic core active.
Street food and open-air markets provide the clearest sense of everyday life, especially around fish stalls and small bakeries. The volcano remains visible from many streets and shapes excursions, agriculture and local memory. Traffic and worn buildings can make the city feel rougher than nearby resort towns, but its energy and setting are unusually direct.
