Piazza Armerina

Piazza Armerina is a small hill town in central Sicily, with a compact centre of churches, stone houses and narrow streets. Its wider importance comes from a nearby late Roman villa containing exceptionally detailed floor mosaics. The surrounding interior is agricultural and lightly visited, with wheat fields, olive groves and small settlements spreading across the hills.

The archaeological site rewards slow viewing because its scenes reveal domestic life, hunting and imperial wealth across many rooms. The town itself provides a calmer counterpoint, with local food and residential streets set within rolling agricultural countryside. Many mosaics survive in their original rooms, allowing the imagery to be read alongside the architecture of an elite rural residence.
