OVERVIEW
Tortuguero is a wetland region on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, with rivers, lagoons and forest surrounding a small village. Sea turtles, birds and freshwater wildlife support a conservation focused visitor economy. The relationship between canal waterways, nesting beaches and dense rainforest across a remote wetland region reached mainly by boat and wetland gives the wider destination a distinctive structure beyond its principal visitor area.
Boat trips and guided walks provide the main experiences, while seasonal turtle nesting requires strict rules. Heavy rain and limited road access preserve a strong sense of remoteness. Spending time with both canal waterways and nesting beaches and dense rainforest across a remote wetland region reached mainly by boat reveals more of the destination than focusing only on its best known sights.
