OVERVIEW
Arenal is a nature region in northern Costa Rica, centred on a steep volcanic cone rising above rainforest, farmland and a large artificial lake. The town of La Fortuna provides the main base, with roads leading to forest trails, waterfalls, old lava fields and hot springs heated by underground activity. The volcano is currently quiet, but its shape remains the dominant landmark across the valley.
Suspension bridges reveal the forest canopy, trails cross old lava and secondary woodland, and rivers support rafting and wildlife viewing. Cloud can hide the volcanic summit for long periods, so a visit should not depend on one view alone. Geothermal springs, rainforest and water-based activities provide substantial variety even when the mountain remains out of sight.
