OVERVIEW
Monteverde is a cloud forest region in Costa Rica’s central highlands, with reserves, farms and small settlements spread across steep green terrain. Persistent moisture supports exceptional plant and bird diversity. The wider destination extends from forest towards forest interior, with local communities occupying the ground between them. Beyond the central area, forest interior and forest continue to organise settlement, movement and everyday land use.
Walking, birdwatching and canopy experiences provide the main appeal, while weather changes quickly. Skilled guides reveal species and ecological relationships easily missed independently. Conditions around port can differ noticeably from river corridors, so flexible timing improves the overall experience. Farms is encountered differently from port, making it worthwhile to leave time for both parts of the destination.
