Simien Mountains

Simien Mountains is a highland region in northern Ethiopia, with deep valleys, sharp cliffs and settlements spread across cultivated slopes, while endemic wildlife inhabits the protected high country. The transition between lower valleys and high slopes remains visible away from the principal visitor routes, especially where lower valleys meets high slopes. Beyond the main centre, mountain settlements and lower valleys continue to shape settlement and movement across the wider destination.

Multi day trekking provides the strongest experience, while altitude and weather require preparation. Experiencing both sheer escarpments and high plateaux and rare wildlife across a dramatic mountain region shaped by erosion and village life provides a fuller perspective than focusing only on the principal visitor area. Mountain settlements is experienced differently from lower valleys, so both areas contribute separate perspectives, especially where mountain settlements meets lower valleys.
