OVERVIEW
Gondar is a highland city in northern Ethiopia, known for a walled royal enclosure containing castles and palaces from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Churches, old neighbourhoods and modern commercial streets extend beyond the historic core. The city’s architecture reflects a distinctive period of imperial rule. Churches and palaces belong to the same connected landscape, although they often feel distinct on arrival.
The castle complex and richly painted churches provide the strongest cultural focus. Markets and hill views add everyday context, while nearby mountains offer major trekking options. Current security conditions should be checked carefully before travel. Exploration centred only on markets would miss churches, where local activity and landscape remain equally visible.
