OVERVIEW
Axum is a small highland town in northern Ethiopia that once served as the capital of a powerful ancient kingdom. Tall carved stone stelae, underground tombs and scattered archaeological remains show the scale of that civilisation, while churches continue a religious tradition closely linked to Ethiopian Christianity. The modern settlement is modest and grows around these historic sites rather than apart from them.
Pilgrimage remains part of everyday life, especially around the church complex associated with the Ark of the Covenant in Ethiopian tradition. Archaeological areas are dispersed but close enough to connect on foot or by short drives. The surrounding plateau, dry fields and distant mountains provide a quiet setting that makes the surviving monuments feel less isolated from the living town.
