OVERVIEW
Sacred Valley is a broad valley near Cusco, with archaeological sites, villages and agricultural terraces spread along a winding river. Snow covered mountains rise above fertile fields, while markets and local communities remain active throughout the region. Beyond the main centre, mountains and surrounding slopes continue to shape settlement, movement and everyday land use. River and surrounding slopes form separate but closely connected parts of the destination’s geography.
Driving and rail journeys connect the principal settlements, but slower travel reveals craft, farming and daily village life. Altitude is lower than in nearby highland cities, making the valley a useful place to acclimatise. A visit centred only on valley floor would overlook surrounding slopes, where local activity and landscape remain equally visible.
