OVERVIEW
Cusco lies high in the Andes and retains the street plan and stone foundations of the former Inca capital. Spanish churches, monasteries and houses were constructed over earlier palaces and temples, creating a dense historic centre of visible layers. Markets, plazas and residential hills surround the main ceremonial core.
Altitude affects most visitors and makes a slower first day sensible. Museums and nearby ruins deepen the understanding of Inca history, while food and craft markets keep the centre active. Tourism is intense, but quieter neighbourhoods and early-morning streets reveal a more local side beyond the main routes.
