OVERVIEW
Machu Picchu is a fifteenth century Inca settlement built on a high ridge above a deep river valley. Temples, terraces and residential structures are arranged in close relationship with the surrounding mountains. The transition between temples and river is visible across the destination, especially away from its best known centre. Beyond the central area, residential districts and temples continue to organise settlement, movement and everyday land use.
Timed access and controlled routes shape the visit, making advance planning essential. The site is most rewarding when its engineering, sacred geography and wider landscape are considered together. Temples is encountered differently from residential districts, making it worthwhile to leave time for both parts of the destination. A visit centred only on main settlements would overlook river, where the wider landscape and local activity remain visible.
