OVERVIEW
Rupununi is a broad savanna region in southern Guyana, where grasslands, wetlands and isolated mountains extend between forest zones. Indigenous villages, cattle ranches and wildlife reserves are widely scattered across the landscape. Forest occupies a different part of the area from villages, creating a clear physical contrast beyond the central visitor zone. The transition between villages and river remains visible across the wider destination, especially away from the busiest routes.
Travel requires careful logistics, often combining rough roads, river journeys and small aircraft. Wildlife, community stays and immense open skies reward longer itineraries planned with experienced local operators. Routes between wetlands and mountains reveal how the destination changes beyond its principal attractions. A visit centred only on wetlands would overlook river, where local activity and landscape remain equally visible.
