OVERVIEW
Canaima is a remote region of forest and open savanna dominated by sheer-sided plateau mountains. Rivers spill from their summits in immense waterfalls, including the world’s highest uninterrupted drop. A small lagoon-side settlement provides basic lodges and air access, while most journeys continue by boat and on foot into the wider protected landscape.
Reaching the principal waterfall requires river travel through rapids and rainforest, with conditions strongly affected by water levels. Flights reveal the scale of the plateaux more clearly, while lagoon falls can be visited closer to the main settlement. Infrastructure is limited, and the remoteness is an essential part of both the challenge and the appeal.
