OVERVIEW
Central Suriname contains a vast expanse of largely undisturbed rainforest crossed by rivers and broken by occasional granite outcrops. Human settlement is minimal, and most access depends on small aircraft, boats and specialist guides. The forest supports exceptional plant diversity, monkeys, jaguars, giant otters and hundreds of bird species.
Wildlife often remains hidden within dense vegetation, making sound, tracks and canopy movement as important as direct sightings. River journeys, forest walks and climbs to exposed viewpoints reveal different layers of the landscape. Conditions are humid and logistics complex, but the absence of roads and large settlements preserves a rare sense of ecological continuity.
