OVERVIEW
Brownsberg is a rainforest region in central Suriname, set on a forested plateau above the Brokopondo Reservoir. Trails descend through dense tropical vegetation to waterfalls and viewpoints, while monkeys, birds and other wildlife inhabit the surrounding reserve. Access is by road from the capital, but facilities remain basic and conditions become muddy during heavy rain.
Monkeys, birds and forest insects are more likely to be heard than clearly seen, especially during the heat of the day. Trails can be muddy and steep, and guides improve wildlife identification. The elevated views over flooded forest and distant water distinguish the reserve from lowland jungle sites closer to the coast.
