OVERVIEW
Réunion is a mountainous island in the Indian Ocean, dominated by active volcanic landscapes, steep interior cirques and densely settled coastal plains. French infrastructure, Creole culture and communities with African, Asian and European roots shape everyday life. The destination extends from coast towards trails, with local life continuing well beyond the best known landmarks. Coast occupies a different part of the area from markets, creating a clear physical contrast beyond the central visitor zone.
Hiking is the strongest way to understand the interior, while coastal towns, markets and beaches provide a different rhythm. Weather changes sharply with elevation, making flexible plans essential for mountain viewpoints and trails. A visit centred only on beaches would overlook coast, where local activity and landscape remain equally visible.

THINGS TO DO
Spend time at Réunion’s coastline rather than treating every nearby beach as interchangeable. Swimming conditions, access and facilities can vary, so check locally before entering the water. Choose it only if it fits your base and route.
Drive Réunion’s coastal roads
Build a manageable drive through Réunion’s coastal roads, allowing for stops and slower roads. In a destination as spread out as Réunion, choose a route that works from your base.
Road Trips
Half or full day
Walk Réunion’s coastal trails
Choose a walk around Réunion’s coastal trails that matches your time, fitness and current conditions. Check the route and weather locally instead of assuming every trail is accessible year-round.
