OVERVIEW
Qadisha Valley is a deep mountain valley in northern Lebanon, with monasteries, caves and villages set into steep limestone slopes. Christian communities used the difficult terrain as a place of refuge for centuries. Terraced orchards and stone villages occupy the gentler slopes, while cliffs conceal hermitages and small monastic communities. Springs and seasonal streams support cultivation on narrow terraces.
Walking routes connect religious sites, orchards and forested sections, although paths can be demanding. The relationship between settlement, faith and topography gives the valley its distinctive character. Snow and seasonal rain affect paths, making lower village routes and monastery visits more practical than full valley crossings at certain times. Cedar forests on the upper slopes add ecological importance to the sacred landscape.
